                        I wanted to remind everyone that lilies are fatally toxic to cats.

Every part of the flower is toxic and will cause kidney failure and even death. 

If you think you`ve put the Lily out of your cat`s reach, you are gambling your cat`s life. Don`t risk it. 

Working in the veterinary field I have seen many cats die from Lily toxicity. I have never seen one survive. 

If your cat Is exposed to a lily, take them to an emergency hospital right away.

                        As someone who has been in the veterinary field for 21 years, I have seen my share of dog bites to other animals. Pets coming in for an injury or even killed after being "bite by dog" (bbd) or "bite by big dog" (bbbd), or even "bit by something" when they were attacked by wildlife.  

We also end up dealing with dog bites to humans, whether it is one of our team members who is bitten by one of our patients, or the occasional dog bite to another client in the lobby, or even when a pet owner contacts us because their dog has bitten another dog at home.

It is obviously devastating to the pets but also to pet owners when their fury loved one is injured by another animal or bites a human.  Especially when in many of these instances it was completely preventable.  

The AVMA has National Dog Bite Prevention Week next month.  

ANY DOG can bite, & it is many times the dog owner`s fault for not recognizing their dog`s body language, not neutering their dog, keeping the dog on a leash, socializing their dog appropriately, or even training them at all.   

So, what is the answer?  

- Enforcing generic laws on dangerous dogs that are not breed specific, with an emphasis on chronically irresponsible owners

- Enforcing animal control ordinances such as leash laws

- Prohibiting dog fighting

- Encouraging neutering

- Conducting school-based & adult education programs that teach about pet selection strategies, pet care & responsibility, & bite prevention

- Put your dog on a leash even if it is not required by your city or local ordinances  

- Know your dog`s behaviors & don`t put your dog in a situation where the only thing they can do to protect themselves is bite reactively out of self-preservation.   

- DON`T get a breed that does not match your lifestyle & abilities or you even know how to handle. 

- DON`T TOUCH DOGS YOU DON`T KNOW! I have seen kids & adults get bit because they thought they should pet a dog that "looked friendly" & even the friendliest dogs don`t love everyone. Biting can be a natural reaction for any animal when they are scared or uncomfortable.

                        Yes I took another weekend off and had so much fun! I did a 10k with my good friend @susie_aguas

We did the 50th anniversary of Run Seal Beach! 

As a veterinary professional who is constantly working it is so important to take time off. I have given several presentations on self-care and work-life-balance so I do try to "walk the talk" and take time for myself.

                        Yey today we had another successful SCVMS webinar!

I have been hosting monthly webinars regarding veterinary practice management since last year. 

Today my speaker was Desiree Miley, CVPM, PHRca the executive director of Golden State Humane Society. She talked about creating the best veterinary team by finding the pieces that fit together. 

My cat Gigi was so enthralled listening to Desiree talk, she sat on my lap and watched her for about 20 minutes lol.

                        Yes I take weekends off lol. 

Owning my own company means I`m constantly thinking about work and I end up working a lot. 

So I have to actively take time off and have fun with my family 😁

I had a great time with my niece and nephew and my husband over the weekend (I didn`t get any pictures of him lol). The rain changed some of our plans but we were able to get some "park" time in on Sunday. We have been going to the same park since my nephew was 2!

                        I`m at Long Beach Airport ready to board my plane! I am flying to Las Vegas for the WVC conference! I had the honor of speaking at this conference last year, this year I`m just an attendee. 

It`s going to be a great week for education and getting to hangout with friends and colleagues.

As a CVPM I have a lot of CE that I have to get regularly. But what better way to get CE then go to Las Vegas 😝

                        Andrea Crabtree & I have been friends for 16 years. We started out as colleagues meeting at our local veterinary managers group. We then discovered that we shared similar career aspirations and started spending a lot of time with each other. We took & passed our CVPM exam together. 

In 2011 we created the North Orange County Veterinary managers group. We ran it for 13 years before turning it over to two other managers to carry on the tradition. 

We are both members of the SCVMA & went to local chapter meetings, some together, some separate.  Every year we attend the SCVMA annual installation & awards dinner together. 

We became part of Peter Weinstein`s Vets for Pets group attending those quarterly meetings together. 

Originally we both managed competing veterinary practices & then over time we both went to different hospitals & grew our skill sets. 

We have attended many conferences together over the years & fully supported one another in our successes. 

We both left full-time veterinary practice management & each opened our own veterinary management consulting companies.

We are technically competitors again, each working with hospitals in Southern California & other parts of the country. 

Why am I sharing this? 

Because even though we technically have been competitors for most of our careers, we have always been each other`s biggest cheerleaders. So many times we have asked each other for advice to grow our businesses. We have even shared clients with each other. 

The phrase "women supporting other women" applies to Andrea and I. 

And we have a tribe of women who have supported one another through the most difficult times in our lives. through divorces, deaths in our families, career changes, moving homes, and everything in between. We are stronger together.

Women supporting other women is so important for society. We don`t need to tear each other down, all we need to do is build each other up. 

It`s easy.

                        13 years ago today I passed my Certified Veterinary Practice Manager exam! 

This was the first step of many that would turn my job not only in to a career, but into my own company.

                        Today is National clean off your desk day! I didn`t even know that until about 5 minutes ago.

Ironically I spent an hour and a half this morning cleaning off and organizing my desk. I wish I would have taken a before picture so you guys could see how messy it was lol.

Since I have a home office, I tend to pile stuff up all the time. And then I feel overwhelmed and it`s hard for me to get motivated. In fact sometimes I just take my stuff to the dining room table because I can`t stand working in a messy space.

I realized that if I keep a cleaner desk, then I can be more productive. I`m pretty sure I have ADD (although I have never bothered having this diagnosed) so it`s super easy for me to squirrel out. So I can definitely use all the help I can to stay focused.

But now I can finish up this afternoon with a cleared off desk and feeling good about the progress I made. 

So if you have a messy desk, then clean it off too!
