Join my August SCVMS Webinar!

"What Does it Mean to Be a Veterinary Leader"

Becoming a veterinary leader is not easy. In order to create the best conditions for everyone around us, we've got to step into being a leader.

Being a leader means taking responsibility. It means letting the ego aside and being able to act and make decisions that are in the best interest of everyone.

In this webinar, you'll learn the tools to create leadership from the inside:
- How to create the feeling of safety for yourself, so you can stay calm and grounded no matter what happens on the outside
- Being able to take and give feedback without emotional turmoil
- Admitting you're in the wrong, without feeling YOU are wrong.
- Not feeling responsible for everyone else's feelings
- How to stay active listening, making people feel seen and heard
- Setting boundaries that feel good, and how to uphold them

Presented by Gunila Pedersen, MRCVS

CVPM credit pending for those who attend live*

Register today and I will send out the recording after the webinar for those who are not able to attend the live session. The presentation will be uploaded to my YouTube Channel

Yesterday morning I went walking with two of my girlfriends and then later my husband and I enjoyed "Beach Street" where Broadway and 4th Street were closed to traffic so bicyclists and pedestrians could walk freely in the street. We enjoyed all the vendors and the giant screen portraying the world cup final.

I walked 10.5 miles and over 28,000 steps.

I'm so happy that my legs are able to do that. I have multiple sclerosis, and sometimes I'm still surprised that I can walk. There are many people with MS who can't, including one of my favorite actresses, Christina Applegate.

I know that when I started my new treatment in 2021, it was the best decision I ever made. And that is why my legs are still strong because of that decision and my neurologist.

My message is simple, listen to your body, make good decisions for your health, whatever that looks like. For me it's listening to my neurologist.

We celebrated my dog Foxy's 16th birthday today!

I'm so happy to have had her for the past 15 years.

Of course we had a party to celebrate for her! We held it at Yorba Regional Park where I had my 16th birthday party 🥳

I love this little dog. She is a lot of fun and she's still kind of crazy even though she's older LOL.

She's great with our kitties and she sometimes loves her doggy brother and other times she just tolerates him LOL.

We can't believe she's made it this long, and my husband and I consider every day with her a blessing. ❤️❤️❤️

Many of you know that my full-time job is my company, South Coast Veterinary Management solutions, where I work as a veterinary management consultant. But you might not know, that part-time I am the referral marketing coordinator for Orange County Emergency Pet Clinic.

I have worked for OCEPC for 8 years and I know they are a wonderful hospital. They have two locations, one in Fullerton and one in Garden Grove.

On Friday 5/22 when 40,000-50,000 people were evacuated because of the imminent threat of chemical spill or explosion, OCEPC stepped up!

Even though we are an animal emergency only facility, (we do not do boarding or general wellness care), our manager Elaine Myers knew the hospital needed to help the community. So we started taking on animal evacuees Friday afternoon. We welcomed as many domestic animals as we could fit. By Friday night our hospital was full of evacuees and our regular emergency patients.

I'm very proud to work for a company whose sole mission is to help pets in the community.

Our Garden Grove location has been a fixture in Garden Grove for 51 years and we have helped tens of thousands of pets needing emergency care. And now we have helped pets that came to us through a "human" emergency situation.

Unfortunately the situation in Garden Grove has not resolved and it is still dire and 50,000 people are still evacuated.

I am praying that they will find a solution to this problem so that people and their pets can go back to their homes 🙏❤️

It's my 23rd anniversary of starting in the veterinary field!

My very first day was on May 16th 2003. I worked at The Cat Care Clinic as a veterinary assistant/receptionist. I went to Cal Poly Pomona to get my Bachelor's Degree in Pre- veterinary Animal Science because I thought I wanted to become a veterinarian.

I realized during my senior year at Cal poly that I liked the business side of the hospital more than treating the patients.

So after graduating in 2005 instead of going on to veterinary school, I became a practice manager and started running hospitals.

I became a Certified Veterinary Practice Manager in 2011, a PHRca and a Certified Compassion Fatigue Professional. in 2020.

My career has evolved over the years, and I went from being a practice manager at one hospital, to being a veterinary management consultant to help with the management of many hospitals.

I'm grateful for all of the opportunities I've had over the years, and I can't imagine being in a better field.

I am very pleased to announce my May South Coast Veterinary Management Solutions Webinar,

'Redefining Performance Reviews with Empathy, Empowerment, and Purpose"

A coaching-informed approach to meaningful growth conversations in veterinary leadership. Traditional performance reviews in veterinary medicine often feel stressful, transactional, and misaligned with the realities of a high-emotion, high-burnout profession.

This webinar invites veterinary leaders to reimagine reviews as intentional growth conversations rather than evaluative checklists.

Today I helped my sister Courtney, the owner of Simply Radiant Events run the Yorba Days celebration in Yorba Linda!

It was a really fun event, there were pets for adoption, lots of food, cool booths and vendors
plus an insane car show!

I had a great time and I ran into a former client from when I worked at The Cat Care Clinic!

Today is my infusion day so this is my workstation. I will be spending the next 4 to 5 hours sitting in a chair in a Kaiser office.

Two years ago my neurologist tapered down my MS treatments to once a year. I have been this on this medication for 6 years now and it has made a difference.

Since my diagnosis in 2006 I have been on multiple medications. I went from daily injections, to every other day injections, to twice a week injections, to twice a year infusions and now once a year infusion.

Multiple Sclerosis is a complicated autoimmune disease and I deal with its challenges to the best of my ability. I am fortunate that I have a good neurologist who has put me on a good treatment.

The symptoms I have experienced over the years include dizzy spells/vertigo, weakness in my in my arms & legs, slurring my words, balance issues, not being able to walk, nystagmus, double vision, blurred vision, spasticity in my legs, sound sensitivity, and many others.

Why do I share this? Because I know that I am not alone, millions of people deal with autoimmune diseases everyday and there is nothing to be ashamed of.

I also share because originally I was misdiagnosed as having a "pinched nerve" when really I had developed multiple lesions in my brain. I had MS for another 4 years and didn't know. I just thought I was imagining my symptoms and was embarrassed to go to the doctor again. It wasn't until I was hospitalized with Vertigo that I found out I had this illness.

If you feel that something is wrong, get help. Don't stop until you get a diagnosis. Get a 2nd opinion. Fight for yourself!

For the next two days, I'm attending the Grief Summit webinars.

As a certified compassion fatigue professional, I'm required to have a certain amount of continuing education hours. I love attending this program because I learn a lot about grief and understanding.

Grief is so much more than we think it is. Even though the focus on this training is mostly about death and dying, I've learned so much more about grief.

It's not just about death, it's about the loss of anything, a job, a car, or your favorite sweater. It's about learning how to communicate through this grief.

The speakers so far today have been amazing, my favorite being David Kessler ❤️

I am thrilled to have Lucy Nash, RVT back to talk to us about why investing in your veterinary team's education is important and how it benefits the hospital.

Since the average turnover of the support team in a veterinary hospital is 23% (and it costs more to hire a new employee than to keep a current one) we need to look into ways we can utilize our current team members better.

HR update time! In order to maintain my PHRca designation I have to get 64 hours of HR specific CE every 3 years.

Today I'm attending 7 and 1/2 hours of lecture learning, HR law, California specific laws as well as federal laws. So far the topics have been great and I love the speakers!

Missing the usual suspects because they are out of state. @lesliedb1 and @imcraby2

Last weekend I lectured at the Oregon Veterinary Medical conference!

I gave six lectures and it was a lot of fun. It was a long day, but I had a great audience. I realized that I completely forgot to get a picture of my last session which was completely full! 😁

Corvallis Oregon was also a beautiful place and I enjoyed my dinner at Squirrels tavern

My March SCVMS Webinar is near to my heart, focusing on end-of-life care and client communication.

Pet euthanasia is something that most veterinary hospitals do regularly and yet it is something that we don't always teach our team how to communicate about it compassionately.

Bond-Centered Transition is an approach to transition care that prioritizes both the patient and the family. It uses the human–animal bond as the foundation to create a peaceful, respectful environment that honors the emotional and physical needs of all involved. This more recent approach re-energizes the compassionate side of transition care to include the veterinary team, patient and the family by utilizing communication skills, environmental changes, sensory processing and much more.

This is a good webinar not only for the leadership team, but for the entire team to watch.

Presented by Sumitra Price, RVT, CVPM, CCFP

Thursday, March 12th.

10 am PST

Can't watch it live? Register anyway and I will send out the recording after the webinar.
