This is information is regarding recruiting needs from my presentation on HR items that most veterinary practice managers deal with on a regular basis.

Animal hospital of Huntington Beach is looking for a full-time experienced associate veterinarian to work at our small animal and exotic hospital in beautiful Huntington Beach. Our hospital was established in 1978 and has been serving the city of Huntington Beach and the surrounding areas with caring, experienced veterinary care for dogs, cats, small mammals, birds, and exotics. We have recently completed a full remodel and expansion of our building, which provides us with a beautiful space and extra room to serve our patients and clients.

We are open 7 days a week, but we do not require any on-call or after-hours emergencies. A Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree with Calif. license required.

An interest in exotic pet medicine, a strong surgical background, and aptitude with ultrasound are helpful.

Example Survey Questions

  1. Do you have any schedule restrictions within our hours of operation?
  2. List the most recent (within the past two years) client service/veterinary industry education that you have had. It’s okay if you haven’t had recent education in this area. We are just trying to find out more about you.
  3. Is client service your career objective or do you have additional career aspirations? If so, what are they?
  4. Do you have experience working with unhappy clients? If so, how do you believe they are best handled?
  5. Have you ever been reviewed? If yes, list some of the positive things your employer cited about your performance. Tell us what they wanted you to improve upon.
  6. Have you ever worked in a very positive work environment? If so, how did you contribute to the workplace’s positivism?

Phone interview or in person questions

Ask opened ended questions rather than ones w/yes or no answers

  1. Tell me about your most recent job. Why do you want to change?
  2. What did you like the most and the least about that job?
  3. Why do you want to work for our hospital?
  4. What gives you the greatest satisfaction in your job?
  5. How frequently do you work w/computers?  What software are you familiar with?
  6. How would you rate your medical knowledge?  Poor, fair, good, or excellent?  Why?
  7. Do you know what the top 5 common diseases in dogs and cats are? (there are no right or wrong answers to this, just looking for their knowledge)
  8. (If for tech or assistant) What are your top 5 tech skills that you can do 99% of the time?

Ask behavioral questions that assess what they have done, not what they would do

  1. What sort of situations do you find challenging?
  2. Do you prefer working in groups or independently?  What do you expect from other team members?
  3. What is your superpower? (Not a fake one, something that they are really good at).
  4. Give me an example of a time when you had a conflict w/a co-worker and what you did about it
  5. Who was your favorite boss and why?
  6. Please tell me about a time when you had to deal with an unhappy client.  What happened and what did you do?
  7. Give me an example of when you showed initiative and took the lead on something when it wasn’t expected of you.
  8. How will I know when you are stressed out? If I was standing next to you how would I be able to tell?
  9. Sometimes no matter what you do a client is dissatisfied.  Please tell me about a time when you had to deal with an unhappy client.  What happened and what did you do?
  10. Excellent customer service involves going above and beyond typical client expectations.  Give me an example of when you have done this? 
  11. What are your strengths?  Why do you think they are your strengths?
  12. What are your weaknesses?  How to you plan on improving on them?
  13. Give me an example of a time when you had a conflict w/a co-worker and what you did about it
  14. How to do you feel about euthanasia?
  15. If a patient was brought in HBC, describe what you would do (no right or wrong answer to this)
  16. What are you specifically looking for in your future employment?
  17. Where do you want to be in five years?
  18. Why should our facility hire you instead of someone else with equal qualifications?

Onboarding

  1. Give each new employee a new hire training folder,
    • which should include
    • Job offer
    • Job description
    • Phase training checklist
    • Employee schedule
    • Employee phone contact lists in case they need to reach a co-worker
    • Last 6 months of team meeting agendas
    • Hospital employee handbooks
    • All legally required documents for federal, state or local area
    • Pair employee with a mentor/or trainer to help guide them during the training process
